Angi List is basically a scam

Although I don’t have any screenshots, for anyone that is in the service industry and has thought about advertising to get more leads DO NOT advertise with Angi List. Although what they do is legal technically before signing up they tell you “there are a lot of jobs in your area and our contractors can’t keep up” and tell you that they charge a set rate of X amount a month in exchange for giving you leads. What they don’t tell you is it’s not just X amount per month. It’s a large sum of money ex. $4,800 per month split into small increments that’s you pay monthly. To make matters worse they have a cancellation fee of 35% of what you owe. All written in the contract you sign. The worst part about their service is that once you sign up their representatives disappear making it nearly impossible to contact them whether to cancel the contract or to get help. On top of all that the leads they provide are absolute shit. I once had a house I was scheduled to go quote for a job and when I pull up there was already another contractor doing the work, mind you I got that lead quite literally 30 minute before. So to anyone thinking of working with Angi list, don’t. Rather invest in a website and work with lead generation companies that drive traffic to your website.

I don't understand how they are still around. They suck for the contractor and the customer.

i tried using them as a customer once. i needed a smallish job done and they offered me an instant price quote based on my vague description of the work which was insanely low.

i didn't accept because it was stupidly cheap but i wonder what would've happened if i did accept it. bait & switch? or would they have tried to force some contractor to do it for that cheap?

47

I wonder what their TOS says; if it's an estimate based on the base service you're looking for, and then the contractor can add on more services/supplies/etc to get the job done?

I forget the details, but I made the mistake of signing up for Angie's List over ten years ago.

I never got scammed, but I was able to figure out it was a ripoff.

I was on home advisor before and after bought by angis and this is accurate their business model should be illegal. Plus the clients that they give you basically want the work for free. I left them and never returned. Totally a scam NO DOUBT

85

100% with you on that. They never deliver on their lead promises and it takes weeks to get in contact with an agent.

31

I sort of think it's an extortion racket like yelp

Nearly signed up with them 2 years ago... Have been getting calls a few times a week wanting me to sign up now. No matter how many times I say I'm not interested or just hang up they keep calling. Worse than the spam calls I get. I'm with Thumbtack atm and it's okay at best. Customers ghost you constantly and you pay like 5x more than you would for a hit on Google ads .

27

Thumbtack is definitely not the beat but at least they do not pull the same shit Angi does.

12

One thing you can do is tell the Angi representative to not call you again. Record it. Then every time they call you, you are entitled to $1,000 every time they do after that. Easy money.

Not a contractor....when I looked in to it, I found out that they don't vet their contractors...if they pay...they will be listed. And if there are any bad reviews, for a price....they can be wiped off the site. So as a potential customer, I'll give them a hard pass.

20

Yup. The leads they send you, they send to like 7 other contractors.

Also, they call me like every week. I once told one of their reps I wasn’t interested and he said “you’re not interested in getting more leads?” And I said “no” and he said “I can’t fix stupid” and hung up. Lol fuck them

17

After all of the awful stories I’ve heard about Angie’s List , plus how scammy it felt when I almost accidentally signed up for it a week ago, I cannot understand how they still exist and are allowed to do what they do.. it’s a pretty open-faced scam, they don’t even try and hide it

36

Mostly because what they do is borderline illegal but still legal and because they have a contract attached to their service which makes it hard for anyone to put blame on the company

As a customer, I abandoned Angie’s list the minute I found out they started working with contractors. Talking to my neighbors is 1000% more effective at finding good contractors anyway.

12

As a customer I hated it. And the spam that comes along with it is unbearable.

6

I tried using them as a customer once. I wanted help with windows so I completed all their online questions. Then they showed me two companies that install floors. After that, they spammed the hell out of me. Total waste of time and then some due to having to block the emails.

5

It’s giving me !MLM vibes, judging by the way they not only treat their customers but also by the fact they don’t vet their contractors.

I tried to use them once about 15 years ago. When I searched the site for some specific kind of work I can’t remember , they showed hundreds of options in my area, but I had to pay to see them. I paid, there were 2 options in my area total.

I requested a refund, they refused. I filed a better business bureau complaint, then they gave me my money back.

Fuck this scammy ass company.

Angi List and its prior names was initially a good idea. But the execution and upkeep of the site was woefully poor. Contractors were supposed to be 'Vetted' and were not properly. And complaints piled up/disappeared on a regular basis, many times with no rhyme or reason.

How it is still in business is anyone's guess.

3

I think it didn’t use to be, which is how they developed a good reputation, then they maybe got bought by different owners, or just changed directions radically, and Yelped on us, and now they’re awful. A lot of people, both businesses that want to advertise, and consumers that want to hire people, still know them by their old reputation, which they bank on.

This company is the fucking worst. Angi is about angi, screw the customer and fuck over the contractors. Gotta love America, where this shit is not only enabled but allowed and encouraged

I was trying to find a company to clean granite. I found a website that said "TJS Granite Cleaning". I completed the form for a quote. Next thing I know I am getting calls every hour from granite companies for "granite installation". I asked each where they got my number, and they all replied, "Angi." I then did more research. It appears as though "TJS Granite Cleaning" is a fake website developed by Angi to lure in customers. The contact info is then disseminated to Angi vendors. I am now getting calls as early as 7 AM on Sunday morning, and it has continued throughout the day. ANGI IS A SCAM COMPANY.

I know lots of people happy with Angie's list.

-45

Found the intern that works for Angies’s list!

43

Yes, the people who own it are quite happy.

Not their partners or customers though.

6

Yes Angi employees make almost $100,000 a year plus another $30,000 in commission (they have job postings on indeed and Glassdoor) so yes I would say the only happy people are the ones working for them not with them.

I've found doing searches and making inquiries on the Next Door app the best way to find services. Yelp is more used in a hit and run way around here by tourists (we're in Yosemite area) so not much in the way of businesses serving the everyday needs of residents.

1

Painting contractor here. I got scammed $5k. Has any got money back?

1

$4,800 per month split into small increments that’s you pay monthly

Can you explain that? As written, it doesn't make sense. (And I'm not referring to the "that's", which I assume was supposed to be "that").

1

Oh and if you give them any of your information and then figure it out beforehand like I did because it sounds sketchy as heck they'll just keep calling you it's been 2 months and they call me three times a day

1

They've started using different numbers so that I don't realize it's Angie's List calling
